Imagine celebrating your 100th Birthday during COVID lockdown? No family visiting, no party, no photography!
Meet May O’Reilly – 100 years and still smiling – even during COVID Lockdown!
With COVID restrictions in place, May’s family and friends celebrated her 100th birthday with a “Drive By” parade. There was singing, bagpipes, a fire truck, a procession of cars and well over 100 birthdays cards and messages to make May feel special. Even the Queen sent a special message!
May has a sparkle in her eye, still knits, sings and even Skypes with family. Daughter Ges cares for her, and they have a very special bond. With a love of sport, music and a fair share witty banter and teasing – they look after each other so well!

Why wasn’t I there to document this incredibly special occasion?
With all Deb Ball, Wedding and Portrait work postponed or cancelled due to COVID I had really fallen into a slump, with no motivation for anything including photography. (#coronacoaster).
On May’s birthday I delivered a card and flowers and it occurred to me “why didn’t I bring my camera?”. “Why aren’t I here photographing such an amazing story, capturing these wonderful memories, and documenting the happiness May shares with everyone she meets?”
I’ve never met a Centenarian before. May has lived life through the great depression, wars, inventions and social change. And even during a pandemic which has turned our world upside down she smiles, and is grateful for the life she has lived.
Thank you May for reminding me why I chose photography, for helping me find my purpose again, for the laughs and for the beautiful scarf.
It inspired me to undertake the ISO Driveway Project in my local Traralgon South / Callignee area – and get my mojo back! (Stay tuned for another blog about that project!)
